Can Bed Bugs Live in Carpets?
When people discover bites or suspect bed bugs, one of the first questions they ask is whether the insects are living in the carpet.
It’s a sensible question. Carpets cover a large part of the room and seem like an obvious place for insects to hide. The reality is slightly different — bed bugs usually prefer tight cracks and sheltered spaces rather than open carpet fibres.
Where Bed Bugs Prefer to Hide
Bed bugs want to stay as close as possible to where people sleep. Because of this, the main harbourage points are usually around the bed area.
The most common hiding places include:

Bed frames and joints

Mattress seams and edges

Headboards and wall fixings

Skirting boards near the bed

Furniture joints in bedside cabinets
These areas provide tight spaces where bed bugs can remain protected during the day.
Do Bed Bugs Ever Hide in Carpets?
While they don’t usually live deep inside carpets, bed bugs can sometimes hide along carpet edges, particularly where the carpet meets the skirting board.
These edges create small protected gaps that bed bugs can use as temporary hiding spots, especially if an infestation has grown or if the bed frame area has already been disturbed.
This is why signs sometimes appear around the perimeter of the room, even though the original harbourage point is usually closer to the bed.
Why the Bed Area Matters Most
Bed bugs are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide from sleeping people. Because of this, they tend to establish themselves as close as possible to the bed.
If you only treat visible areas of the room or focus on the carpet alone, the main hiding places around the bed structure may be missed. That’s one of the reasons infestations often return after DIY attempts.
What to Do If You Suspect Bed Bugs
If you think bed bugs may be present, the most important step is to avoid spreading them further.
Try not to move bedding, furniture or bags between rooms while trying to confirm the problem. Bed bugs often spread when items are moved around the house during a rushed inspection.
