I know the words “bed bugs” make most people panic — and I completely understand why. The good news is that if you catch them early, they’re far easier (and cheaper) to deal with.
Here are the five most common signs I see in homes across Peterborough.
1. Small Blood Spots on Sheets
Tiny rust-coloured marks on bedding can be caused by bed bugs being crushed after feeding.
2. Black Spotting Around Mattress Seams
This is one of the biggest indicators. Bed bug droppings look like small black ink dots along seams, buttons, or headboards.
3. Itchy Bites in Lines or Clusters
Bed bug bites often appear in rows or grouped patterns, usually on arms, shoulders, neck or back.
Not everyone reacts to bites, which is why some infestations go unnoticed for weeks.
4. A Musty, Sweet Smell
In heavier infestations, there can be a faint musty odour in the room. It’s not always obvious, but it’s something I check for during inspections.
5. Actually Seeing a Bug
Adult bed bugs are small, brown, and about the size of an apple seed. They tend to hide during the day and come out at night.
If you see one, it’s important to act quickly.
Should You Throw Your Mattress Away?
Usually, no.
I often get called after people have thrown out beds or sofas — but without proper treatment, the problem simply spreads into other areas.
DIY sprays rarely eliminate an infestation fully. In fact, they can make it harder to treat properly.
The Key Is Acting Early
The sooner I treat bed bugs, the easier they are to control. Waiting allows them to multiply and spread into adjacent rooms.
If you’re worried about bed bugs in Peterborough, I’m always happy to give honest advice and assess the situation properly.
