Wasps repeatedly flying beneath roof tiles can be a strong sign that a colony has become established somewhere within the roof structure. The actual nest may be hidden from view, with the wasps using a small opening beneath a tile as their regular route in and out.

I’m Steve from SLS Pest Control, and I help homeowners, landlords and businesses across Peterborough with wasp activity around roofs and other difficult-to-reach parts of buildings. If you are seeing a steady stream of wasps using the same section of roof, I can assess the problem and provide professional treatment where appropriate.

Why Wasps Disappear Beneath Roof Tiles

A roof contains many sheltered spaces that may be attractive to a developing wasp colony. Small openings beneath tiles can provide access to protected areas where a nest can grow away from direct rain, wind and everyday disturbance.

The entrance you can see from outside is not necessarily the exact position of the nest. Wasps may travel beyond the visible gap into a deeper section of the roof structure, which is one reason it is important not to start lifting tiles or pulling parts of the roof apart yourself.

  • Small gaps beneath individual roof tiles
  • Openings around ridges and roof junctions
  • Spaces close to eaves and gutter lines
  • Protected voids behind fascias and soffits
  • Older sections of roof with accessible gaps
  • Concealed areas between the external roof and loft space

How To Recognise Active Wasp Traffic At The Roof

The pattern of movement is usually more useful than seeing an occasional wasp near the house. An active colony may create repeated, purposeful flights to one particular point, with wasps arriving and leaving throughout the warmer parts of the day.

From ground level, you may see them pause briefly on a tile before crawling beneath it. Activity can become easier to notice as the colony develops and more workers begin using the same route.

  • Wasps repeatedly landing on the same roof section
  • Insects crawling beneath one tile or small gap
  • A consistent flight path between the roof and surrounding area
  • Activity becoming busier during warm weather
  • Wasps gathering close to eaves or roof edges
  • Occasional wasps appearing inside upper rooms

What To Do If Wasps Are Going Under Your Roof Tiles

  • Watch the flight path from ground level — repeated use of one point can help identify the active area without disturbing it.
  • Do not climb onto the roof to investigate — working at height near defensive wasps creates an obvious additional risk.
  • Avoid lifting the tiles — the nest may be closer than expected or hidden immediately behind the visible access point.
  • Do not seal the entrance while it is active — wasps may search for another route through the roof structure.
  • Keep nearby windows closed if needed — this can be sensible if wasps are regularly flying close to upstairs rooms.
  • Arrange professional advice — roof-related activity should be assessed with the position and access point in mind.

Professional Help With Wasps Around Peterborough Roofs

When wasps are using a gap beneath roof tiles, the visible entrance is only part of the picture. The nest may be positioned in a nearby void, close to the eaves or further within the roof space. A professional assessment can help determine the appropriate approach without unnecessary disturbance to the active area.

During the heatwave I spotted a very brazen rat in the back garden. I called Steve for some advice. He advised to monitor the situation for 5-7 days, as it could be just passing through given the weather and didn't want to lay poison unless absolutely necessary because of the impact on other wildlife. Unfortunately the rat was seen daily coming up to the patio area near the house, the backdoor to which was open constantly. Called Steve to update. He gave a very reasonable price, explained the process and put bait boxes down. After a couple of weeks there were no more sightings. Steve was professional, polite, approachable throughout and explained everything, which was really helpful. Would absolutely recommend SLS.

Wasp nest found in my garden, wife got badly stung when moving a plant. Called S.L.S and he was out to me within half an hour from the call. He treated the nest and said it should be completely killed off within hours. S.L.S where a lot cheaper than any other quote that i had been given, great value and great service, i would recommend these to everyone with pest issues, and i will definitely use them again in the future if i need them.

Wasp Nests Under Roof Tiles FAQs

Why are wasps going under my roof tiles?
Repeated activity beneath the same roof tile or gap may indicate that wasps are accessing a nest or established colony within a sheltered part of the roof structure.
Does this mean the nest is directly under the tile?
Not necessarily. The visible opening may simply be an access route, with the nest positioned deeper inside a roof void or nearby concealed space.
Should I block the gap beneath the roof tile?
You should not simply seal an active entrance. Wasps may search for another route and could move into a different part of the roof or property.
Can I lift the tile to look for the nest?
This is not recommended. You could unexpectedly expose or disturb active wasps, and working at height adds further risk.
Can wasps under roof tiles get inside the house?
It is possible in some situations, particularly where the roof space connects with gaps leading towards lofts, ceilings or upper rooms.
Do you treat wasp problems around roofs in Peterborough?
Yes, SLS Pest Control provides professional help with active wasp nests and wasp entry points around roofs, tiles, eaves and other parts of properties across Peterborough and nearby areas.
