Early Signs of Bed Bugs Most People Miss

One of the biggest reasons bed bug infestations become difficult to deal with is that the early signs are easy to miss or misinterpret. By the time people are certain it’s bed bugs, the infestation is often already established.

I’m Steve from SLS Pest Control, and many of the call-outs I attend around Peterborough start with the same sentence: “I didn’t think it could be bed bugs at first.” Here are some of the most common early warning signs people overlook.

Bites That Don’t Look Like You Expect

Not everyone reacts to bed bug bites in the same way. Some people develop red marks or itching, while others show very little reaction at all. This makes it easy to blame bites on mosquitoes, allergies, or skin conditions — especially if they appear intermittently.

Early infestations often cause bites only occasionally, which can give a false sense of reassurance that the problem has passed.

Small Marks That Get Ignored

Tiny black dots on bedding, mattress seams, or bed frames are often dismissed as dirt or fluff. In reality, these marks can be early signs of bed bug activity.

Because they’re small and don’t look dramatic, they’re easy to clean away without further thought — but they often return if the source hasn’t been dealt with.

Bed Bugs Staying Out of Sight

In the early stages, bed bugs are very good at staying hidden. They tend to remain close to where people sleep and may only be active late at night. This means you can have an infestation without ever seeing a live insect.

By the time bed bugs start appearing during the day, the infestation is usually much further along.

Problems That Seem to “Come and Go”

A common reason people delay action is because symptoms appear to improve for a short time. This can happen after cleaning, washing bedding, or changing sleeping arrangements.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean bed bugs are gone — it usually means they’ve temporarily relocated or adjusted their behaviour.

Why Missing the Early Signs Matters

When early signs are ignored, bed bugs have time to:

  • Breed and increase in number

  • Spread beyond the bed into furniture and room structure

  • Move into additional rooms

  • Become harder and more disruptive to treat

If you’re seeing any of these signs, it may help to read my page on

Final Thought

Bed bugs rarely appear overnight as a major problem — they build quietly while early signs are missed or dismissed. Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it’s usually worth checking sooner rather than later.
