As a pest controller, I often get calls from people who are surprised to discover that rats, mice, ants, and other pests have been living in their garden for weeks or even months before they become noticeable. Many of these problems start in areas that are rarely checked or maintained.
If you’re enjoying your garden this summer, it’s worth taking a closer look at some of the hidden pest hotspots that could be attracting unwanted visitors.
Garden Sheds and Outbuildings
Sheds provide the perfect environment for many pests. They offer shelter from the weather, protection from predators, and plenty of places to hide.
Rodents can nest behind stored items, while insects may find their way into dark corners and unused equipment. If you keep bird seed, pet food, or gardening supplies in your shed, these can also act as food sources.
Regularly checking behind boxes, sweeping out debris, and keeping food products in sealed containers can help reduce the risk.
Under Decking and Patios
One of the most common places for rodents to establish themselves is beneath decking.
These areas provide excellent cover and are rarely disturbed. Rats can create burrows underneath decking and use the surrounding garden as a feeding ground. Because the activity is hidden, homeowners often don’t realise there is a problem until they start seeing rats during the day.
If you have decking, keep an eye out for holes in the soil, disturbed earth, droppings, or signs of movement underneath.
Compost Bins and Compost Heaps

Spilled seed on the ground creates a reliable food source for rodents. Once rats discover a regular supply of food, they are likely to return repeatedly and may even establish nests nearby.

Log Piles and Stored Materials
Stacks of logs, timber, paving slabs, and other stored materials can provide ideal shelter for pests.
These areas offer protection from predators and create dark, undisturbed spaces where rodents and insects can hide. If materials are stored directly on the ground, they become even more attractive as nesting locations.
Where possible, keep materials raised off the ground and inspect them regularly.
Overgrown Areas of the Garden
Long grass, dense shrubs, and neglected corners of the garden can quickly become pest havens.
Rodents prefer areas where they can move around without being seen. Overgrown vegetation allows them to travel safely between feeding and nesting sites.
Keeping grass trimmed and reducing excessive vegetation can make your garden less attractive to unwanted visitors.
Outdoor Bin Storage Areas
Bins often become a focal point for pest activity during the summer months.
Warm temperatures can increase odours, attracting flies and rodents looking for food. Damaged bin lids or overflowing waste can make the problem even worse.
Keeping bins closed, cleaning them regularly, and avoiding excess waste around the storage area can help keep pests away.
Don’t Ignore Early Warning Signs
Many pest problems start small and become much more difficult to deal with if left untreated.
If you notice droppings, burrows, gnaw marks, unusual smells, or signs of activity around your garden, it is always best to investigate sooner rather than later.
The earlier a pest issue is identified, the easier it is to resolve before it becomes a larger infestation.
