PESTS TO WATCH OUT FOR THIS SUMMER

As the summer weather is upon us and our windows are open more than usual – its likely that you will encounter some unwanted guests at your garden party or barbecue.

We all have a list of pests that drive us crazy during summer, but below are three of the main pests to make sure to keep an eye out for this summer:

Mosquitoes
Mosquitoes are a nuisance, especially when it comes to summer. They will usually turn up uninvited to your family gatherings, barbecues and on camping trips. Mosquitos can leave a nasty bite and can potentially make us sick, so its important to keep an eye out for these blood eating pests and prevent them from entering our gardens or homes.

Common home remedies to keep wasps away include the use of repellents, such as sprays, wristbands, lights and candles. Even having a strategically placed fan can help ward off mosquitoes who are unable to fly against the air current.

Ticks
Another blood sucking pest that comes out in numbers during summer are ticks. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, whether it’s on your bike or a hiking trail, you’re probably very familiar with these ever-present pests already.

Ticks are great at hiding in tall grass, weedy areas, and even you’re clothing. Without proper lawn care and pest control, ticks are hard to tackle. They are known to carry Lyme disease and feed off both human and animal blood; ticks are some of the most important pests to fend off every summer.

For this reason, it’s important to make a habit of inspecting yourself (and your pets) for ticks, especially after some time spent outdoors. Removing ticks immediately will drastically reduce the chances of you catching any sort of illness or disease.

Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are such an annoyance and can cause many sleepless nights. It’s believed that the uptick in bed bug reports during summer is due to an increase in travel. These pests travel in bags, bedding and clothing – and with more people holidaying, there is a greater chance for bed bugs to spread.

Before getting into bed, especially on your travels, always inspect your sheets for bed bugs. Look in the corners of your mattress for black faces that they may have left behind and examine the stitching of the material too.
