How to Pest-Proof Your Home Before Summer Hits

As the days get warmer and the sun starts to stick around a bit longer, pests also begin to make their way back into our homes and gardens. From ants in the kitchen to wasps building nests in the loft, summer in Peterborough is prime time for unwanted visitors.

I’m Steve from SLS Pest Control, and as a pest control specialist working across Peterborough, I’ve helped many homeowners get ahead of pest problems before they get out of hand. Here are some simple, effective ways you can pest-proof your home before summer really kicks in.

1. Seal Up Entry Points

Most pests don’t need much space to get inside – even a gap the width of a pencil can be enough for a mouse. Take time to check around:

  • Windows and door frames

  • Air vents and pipe entry points

  • Roof edges and eaves

  • Gaps in brickwork or damaged pointing

Use sealant, filler, or mesh to block access where you can.

2. Keep Your Kitchen and Bins Clean

Summer pests like ants, flies, and cockroaches are drawn to food and waste. To keep them out:

  • Store food in sealed containers

  • Wipe surfaces after use

  • Rinse recycling before putting it in the bin

  • Take out rubbish regularly and keep bin lids closed

Even pet bowls can attract pests, so it’s best to clean up after feeding time.

3. Tidy Up the Garden

Your outdoor space can either help keep pests away or invite them closer. Here’s what to focus on:

  • Cut back overgrown plants, especially near doors and windows

  • Keep lawns trimmed

  • Move woodpiles and compost bins away from the house

  • Remove standing water from buckets, toys, and plant pots

Wasps, rats, and insects often start outside before heading indoors.

4. Declutter and Deep Clean

A good clear-out is more than just satisfying – it also helps remove hiding spots for pests. Focus on:

  • Loft spaces, garages, and sheds

  • Cupboards under sinks

  • Behind kitchen appliances

  • Old cardboard boxes and paper piles

The fewer places pests can settle, the better protected your home will be.

5. Look for Early Warning Signs

Getting ahead of an infestation saves a lot of hassle later. Keep an eye out for:

  • Droppings or smear marks

  • Gnaw marks on food packaging

  • Insect wings or dead bugs near windows

  • Scratching sounds, especially at night
