Bed Bugs vs Fleas: What’s Biting You?

If you’ve woken up recently with itchy bites and you’re not sure where they’re coming from, you’re not alone. One of the most common questions I get from customers in and around Peterborough is, “How do I know whether it’s bed bugs or fleas?”
Both pests can cause irritation, sleepless nights and stress, but the approach to tackling them is very different — which is why it’s so important to know what you’re dealing with.

So, let’s take a quick look at the key differences and how you can tell which one might be biting you.

🔍 Where Are the Bites Appearing?

Bed Bugs:
Bed bug bites usually show up in clusters or straight lines (often 3–4 in a row). They’re most commonly found on areas of skin that are exposed while you sleep — arms, neck, face and shoulders.

Fleas:
Flea bites tend to be more random and are more commonly found on your lower legs and ankles (because fleas live down in carpets and tend to jump upwards).

🕖 When Are You Noticing the Bites?

Bed Bugs:
If the itching and new bites seem to appear overnight, bed bugs are often the culprit. They feed while you’re sleeping and then retreat back into cracks and seams of the mattress or bed frame.

Fleas:
Flea bites can appear throughout the day – especially after you’ve been sat on the sofa, near a pet bed, or walking on a carpeted area.

🐶 Do You Have Pets?

This isn’t a guaranteed indicator, but it can help.

  • Pets in the house? Fleas are much more likely.

  • No pets? Bed bugs are more common.

That said, even households without pets can still suffer flea infestations (they can be brought in by previous owners, visitors or even wildlife).

🛏️ Visible Signs to Look Out For

Bed Bugs – Signs to Look Out For

  • Small blood spots on bedding

  • Black “pepper-like” droppings around mattress seams

  • Occasionally live insects visible in mattress seams

  • Skin irritation/bites (often in lines or clusters)

Fleas – Signs to Look Out For

  • Black droppings near pet beds or in carpets

  • Fleas seen jumping in carpeted areas or on pets

  • Skin irritation/bites (often on lower legs and ankles)

🧠 Still Not Sure?

If you still can’t tell, don’t worry – lots of people struggle to identify the difference. The good news is that I can carry out a quick inspection and let you know straight away. That way we can get the right treatment in place before things get worse.
