One of the most common things I hear from customers is: “I wish I’d called you sooner.” Pests often start small, but if they’re left alone, they can quickly turn into a much bigger problem. The earlier you spot the signs, the easier (and cheaper) it is to deal with. Here are a few of the key things to watch out for in your home.
Droppings and Smears
Rodents such as rats and mice will often leave droppings in cupboards, along skirting boards, and near food storage areas. You might also notice greasy smear marks along walls or floorboards, caused by their fur brushing against surfaces as they move about.
Strange Noises at Night
If you hear scratching, scurrying, or gnawing sounds – especially at night – it could be rodents moving around in your loft, walls, or under the floorboards. Don’t ignore it, as this usually means you already have more than one.
Bite Marks and Damage
Chewed food packaging, gnawed cables, or holes in furniture are all signs something unwanted has moved in. Rodents need to gnaw constantly to keep their teeth short, so they’ll happily chew through wood, plastic, and even wiring – which can be dangerous.
Unexplained Bites or Itchy Skin
If you wake up with small red bites on your arms, legs, or torso, it could be a sign of bed bugs or fleas. These pests can be hard to spot, but their bites are often the first clue that something isn’t right.
Insect Sightings and Shed Skins
Seeing the odd ant or fly might not seem like a big deal, but a constant stream of insects could mean a nest is nearby. With bed bugs, you might notice tiny dark spots on bedding (droppings) or shed skins left behind.
Bad Smells
Some pests give off distinctive odours. A strong, musky smell could point to rodents, while a sweet, sickly smell is often linked to bed bugs. If your home smells unusual and you can’t put your finger on it, it’s worth investigating.
Why Early Action Matters
The longer pests are left, the more damage they can cause – not to mention the health risks they bring. By acting quickly, you avoid a small issue turning into an infestation that’s harder and more expensive to fix.
