Bed Bug Prevention: Tips to Stop Them Coming Back

I’ve helped plenty of people deal with bed bugs over the years, and I know how stressful it can be. They’re small, sneaky, and can make your life miserable if they’re not treated properly. Once I’ve carried out a treatment, the last thing you want is for them to come back. While no one can ever promise a home will stay completely bed bug-free, there are some simple steps you can take to lower the risk of a re-infestation.

Wash Your Bedding Regularly

Bed bugs love to hide in the seams of mattresses, duvets, and pillows. Washing your bedding on a hot wash (60°C if the label allows) and tumble drying on a high heat will help kill off any unwanted hitchhikers.

Vacuum Often

Regular vacuuming of your bedroom – especially along skirting boards, cracks in the floor, and around your mattress – helps remove any eggs or bugs that may have been missed. Always empty the vacuum outside straight away, sealed in a bag.

Use Mattress and Pillow Protectors

Special encasements are available that zip around your mattress and pillows. They stop bed bugs from being able to get in or out, which means they can’t hide and breed. These covers are well worth the investment if you’ve dealt with bed bugs before.

Be Careful with Second-Hand Furniture

That bargain bedside table or sofa might not be such a bargain if it brings bed bugs into your home. Always inspect any second-hand furniture carefully, especially around seams, joints, and cracks, before bringing it inside.

Check Your Luggage After Travelling

Bed bugs are excellent hitchhikers, and hotels are a common place to pick them up. After travelling, inspect your bags, shoes, and clothes before unpacking. Washing clothes straight away on a hot cycle is a good habit to get into.

What If They Come Back?

Even if you do everything right, there’s always a chance bed bugs can return. If that happens, don’t panic – just give me a call. I use professional methods that are far more effective than anything you can buy over the counter, and I’ll make sure the problem is dealt with properly.
